NASA enlists Relativity Space's giant Terran R rocket for future space missions

NASA is expanding its payload capabilities, adding Relativity Space’s powerful new Terran R rocket to its launch services contract. The decision opens the door to using the superheavy launch vehicle for future science, exploration, and commercial missions, demonstrating NASA’s commitment to diversifying and implementing innovative space technologies.

Terran R: A New Player in the Space Launch Market

The Terran R is a development by Relativity Space that promises to be one of the most powerful launch vehicles on the market. Its key features include a reusable first stage and a significant payload capacity, making it attractive for large-scale space projects. The addition of the Terran R to the NASA Launch Services (NLS) II contract means that the rocket is now officially available to the agency and other government agencies, such as the National Aeronautics and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

How the NASA Launch Services II Contract Works

The NLS II contracts are flexible agreements that allow NASA to regularly review and add new launch service providers. The agreement includes an annual “on-ramp provision” that allows new companies to compete for future missions and for existing contractors to introduce new launch vehicle types not already included in their contracts. The contracts are valid through June 2030 for orders and through December 2032 for performance. The contracts are managed by NASA’s Launch Services Program Office at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
