Google Assistant on mobile is shutting down, Gemini takes over

Google has officially begun the process of phasing out the mobile version of its voice assistant, Google Assistant. The move, announced on September 4, marks the end of Assistant’s nearly decade-long history, handing over the reins to its newest AI, Gemini.

Farewell to Google Assistant

Google has announced these changes to Android users via email. Starting September 4, the mobile Google Assistant will gradually be turned off on devices. Instead, compatible Android devices will automatically switch to Gemini. This migration process will continue over the next few weeks. After the successful transition, users will no longer be able to use the Google Assistant on their smartphones, tablets, or connected devices, and will not be able to revert to the previous version.

Gemini: A New Era of Intelligence

The changes won’t just affect smartphones and tablets. When Gemini becomes the primary assistant on mobile devices, it will also control compatible devices that connect to your phone, including Wear OS smartwatches and supported headphones. Even cars that use Android Auto via a phone connection will switch to Gemini. However, cars with Google built-in will continue to use Google Assistant until the overall rollout plan is complete.

Google also plans to expand Gemini’s presence to devices like Google TV and Google Home smart speakers, signaling the company’s strategic decision to consolidate its AI services under the Gemini brand.

From Assistant to Gemini: A Technological Leap

Launched in 2016, Google Assistant has long been a key interface for users to interact with the Android ecosystem, providing voice search, setting reminders, controlling smart home devices, and more.

Unlike its predecessor, Gemini is built on generative AI models. This allows it to process more complex natural language queries, generate content, have multi-dialogue conversations, and better understand the context of information. Google expects Gemini to fully replace Google Assistant on all Android devices, including phones, tablets, cars, watches, and TVs.

Requirements and exceptions

It is important to note that Gemini requires devices with certain specifications to fully function: at least Android 9 and 2 GB of RAM. For users whose devices do not meet these requirements, or in regions where Gemini is not yet available, Google Assistant will remain functional until the global decommissioning process is complete.

This transition is part of Google's broader strategy to integrate advanced artificial intelligence technologies across its products and services, aiming to provide users with more powerful, flexible, and intelligent interaction experiences.
