PC manufacturers are looking for alternative suppliers
HP, ASUS, and Acer completed certification of Changxin Memory (CXMT) DRAM chips around mid-2026 and have already started using them in some laptop models.
Currently, there are limited supplies and a small number of models, mostly entry-level. In addition, such laptops, according to the publication's interlocutors, are mostly sold outside the US market.
The reason is record demand for memory
The main factor behind the change in procurement strategy was the shortage of DRAM chips, which arose due to large-scale investments in data centers and infrastructure for artificial intelligence systems.
In such conditions, PC manufacturers are looking to diversify supply chains and gain access to any available memory sources.
At the same time, Nikkei Asia sources note that manufacturers are acting cautiously, as the global DRAM market is still controlled by three companies:
- Samsung Electronics;
- SK hynix;
- Micron Technology.
Together they account for over 90% of the global RAM market.
Changxin is gradually entering the global market
For Changxin Memory (CXMT), collaborating with international PC manufacturers is an important step in expanding its presence outside of China.
However, according to sources, the company continues to prioritize the domestic market, so most of its production capacity is directed to Chinese customers.
Reaction of companies
When asked by journalists, Acer said it did not comment on information about specific component suppliers, but confirmed its collaboration with many manufacturers to strengthen the sustainability of supply chains.
ASUS declined to comment, and HP and Changxin Memory did not respond to journalists' requests at the time of publication.

The appearance of Changxin DRAM chips in products of international brands does not mean a radical change in the balance of power in the memory market. For now, it is more of a pragmatic move by PC manufacturers trying to minimize the risks of component supply disruptions in the context of the AI boom.
At the same time, the very fact of CXMT product certification by companies such as HP, ASUS and Acer, indicates a gradual increase in confidence in the Chinese manufacturer. If the shortage DRAM continues, the role of alternative suppliers in the global market may increase significantly.
