The smartphone market is set to enter another phase of transition to OLED panels. according to insiders, a number of manufacturers plan to abandon LCD displays even in the budget segment next year.

The reason for this step was the significant decrease in the cost of producing OLED panels. Thanks to the expansion of production capacities of Chinese companies, their cost has almost equaled the price of traditional LCD displays, which makes the use of OLED economically feasible even in inexpensive smartphones.

In addition, manufacturers are evaluating the concept of mass models with a large OLED display with a diagonal of about 7 inches, combined with a high-capacity battery. Such a configuration may become a new trend among mid-range and budget devices.

Why manufacturers are abandoning LCD

OLED displays have a number of advantages over traditional LCD panels. They provide:

  • virtually infinite contrast,
  • deep black color,
  • richer colors,
  • less power consumption when displaying a dark interface.

LCD panels, on the other hand, require a constant backlight, which increases power consumption and limits contrast levels. In addition, the multilayer construction of LCDs makes it difficult to create thin cases and displays with narrow bezels.

What does this mean for buyers?

If the information is confirmed, soon OLED will no longer be an advantage of only mid-range and flagship smartphones. Buyers of affordable models will get better quality displays without a significant increase in the price of the devices.

However, some manufacturers may continue to use LCD in their most affordable models or as a way to reduce the cost of certain lines. However, the general market trend indicates a gradual replacement of this technology by OLED panels.
