Smart reset against electronic warfare: Ministry of Defense receives Firefly ammunition

Official release The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine confirms the successful completion of tests and readiness for serial scaling of a new class of high-precision weapons - the Firefly guided aviation munition. The main uniqueness of the development is that it was created by military engineers directly within the defense department.

The Tactical Revolution of High-Altitude Drop: Performance Characteristics and Carrier Protection

The main problem with classic heavy drone bombers (such as the Baba Yaga) has so far been the need to descend to extremely low altitudes (up to 100–150 meters) to accurately drop unguided munitions. At such altitudes, heavy and relatively slow copters become easy targets for small arms, enemy FPV drones, and dome-mounted electronic warfare.

The advent of the Firefly guided munition radically changes this algorithm:

  • Safe operating echelon: Firefly is effectively dropped and operated from altitudes of up to 800 meters. This puts the drone bomber out of range of small arms and most enemy trench air defenses.

  • Autonomous trajectory calculation: After separation from the suspension, the munition independently calculates flight ballistics and makes dynamic corrections using control surfaces directly to the target.

  • Absolute immunity to electronic warfare: Firefly homing algorithms are designed to actively suppress satellite navigation. Loss of GPS/GLONASS signals does not affect hit accuracy, allowing it to destroy camouflaged dugouts, firing points, and armored vehicles in hard-to-reach areas.

Licensing under Resolution No. 1310 and royalties to authors

Firefly has successfully passed a series of comprehensive tests on the main types of Ukrainian bomber drones and is fully ready for assembly line production. The legal basis for its rapid entry into service is Government Resolution No. 1310 of October 13, 2025.

This regulatory mechanism allows the Ministry of Defense to transfer design documentation and intellectual property rights to private defense enterprises. Innovators and manufacturers from the Brave1 ecosystem can obtain a license on a closed portal and integrate Firefly technology into their own production lines. At the same time, military inventors (authors of Firefly) are guaranteed to receive 25% of the royalty from the value of the issued licenses, which creates a powerful economic incentive for internal R&D in the Defense Forces.

🧐 HiTech Expert Take: Why Firefly is a logical link in the second phase of Operation Auchan

The appearance of the Firefly, which operates from a height of 800 meters and is not afraid of electronic warfare, directly explains the colossal success of the second phase of Operation Auchan. It was the use of such guided munitions that allowed the crews of 412 OBAK NEMESIS and Lasarʼs Group NGU to fire at camouflaged Russian artillery with impunity. Firefly allows heavy night helicopters to hover high above the range of enemy jammers and surgically place ammunition in a caponier with a self-propelled howitzer "Msta-S" or "Malva".

Firefly’s readiness for serial production ideally complements the Defense Procurement Agency (DOT) statistics on UAV contracting worth UAH 333,6 billion for the first half of 2026. Thanks to the DOT-Chain Defence digital system and the “Baseline” program, private enterprises that receive a Firefly license through Brave1 will be able to ship these munitions directly to combat brigade warehouses in 9 days. Involving 20–30 private factories in the serial scaling of Firefly will allow the Armed Forces of Ukraine to finally meet their need for high-precision and jamming-resistant weapons to destroy logistics and defense lines of the Russian Federation.
