Ukraine has officially secured the status of one of the world's leading players in the deployment of advanced satellite telecom technologies. The national operator Kyivstar, in close coordination with the Ministry of Digital Transformation and the National Commission for the Promotion of announced the successful launch the next evolutionary stage of satellite communication directly to production smartphones — Light Data mode based on Starlink Direct to Cell technology from SpaceX.
This step marks the technology's move beyond the boundaries of classic satellite SMS text messaging. From now on, Ukrainians will be able to seamlessly use popular instant messengers and digital navigation even in parts of the country where there is no terrestrial mobile network coverage, base stations have been destroyed, or electricity has been turned off due to enemy attacks.

🧱 Light Data Functional Architecture: Stack of Available Applications
The new data transmission format is adapted to the critical communication needs in crisis conditions and on the front lines. In the first stage of testing, the SpaceX satellite circuit ensures stable operation of the following services:

Viber and WhatsApp messengers: users can fully exchange not only text messages, but also send voice and video notes, share photos, documents, or stickers.

Navigation via Google Maps allows you to plot routes in real time, download maps of the area, and instantly share accurate geographic coordinates with family, rescuers (State Emergency Service), or fellow citizens.

🔌 How it works: simplicity and hardware limitations
The main engineering uniqueness of Starlink Direct to Cell is that the user does not need to purchase additional equipment, special antennas, or satellite radios.

Automatic connection: just be in the open air (with a direct view of the horizon). A regular smartphone will detect the satellite signal and automatically connect to the Kyivstar-SpaceX network in places where the terrestrial signal of base stations is zero.

Hardware limit in the first stage: currently, Light Data technology is operating in test mode exclusively for owners of Android smartphones with support for 4G (LTE) networks. Owners of Apple devices (iPhone) will have access to the updated satellite data profile a little later.

Supplement, not replacement: The new space infrastructure is seen as a backup layer of the country's digital resilience, organically complementing the terrestrial cellular network during blackouts, but not completely replacing it in terms of speed.

According to official data from the NKEK regulator, during the first six months of pilot testing of basic Starlink Direct to Cell services in Ukraine, more than 6 million subscribers successfully connected to the space network, sending more than 10 million emergency SMS messages via Elon Musk's orbital constellation of satellites.

Head of the National Commission for the Development of Nuclear Energy Lilia Malyon emphasized that the agency is currently promptly forming all the necessary flexible regulatory and frequency conditions so that SpaceX innovations can be implemented as safely as possible, quickly scaled to the level of commercial services, and strengthen the national security of the state.
