Google officially presented The OS Verification feature for Android 17 is designed to protect users from malicious modified versions of the OS masquerading as official ones. The main goal is to give device owners a direct tool to confirm that their system is an officially certified version of Android recognized by Google.
How the test works and what it detects
The system identifies modified versions of Android that appear identical to the official ones but may compromise the integrity of the device or create hidden security risks. The verification page will display three critical parameters:
-
Play Protect status: Confirm the security of installed apps.
-
Bootloader status: whether unauthorized changes have been made at the kernel level.
-
Version number: Check the relevance and authenticity of the current build.
Interestingly, Google has provided the ability to verify the system using another device, which provides an additional level of trust, although the technical details of this method are still being kept secret.
Deployment schedule and first devices
The OS Check feature will debut with the stable version of Android 17. The Pixel 10 series smartphones will be the first to receive it. Other manufacturers (Samsung, Xiaomi, OPPO, etc.) will be able to implement this tool in their stable builds of Android 17 according to their own update schedules.
HiTech Expert Take
For HiTech Expert (expert.com.ua) we note: Google is taking a step ahead of attackers. In an environment where AI can help create extremely convincing software fakes, a built-in “lie detector” for the OS becomes critically important. This is especially true for the secondary smartphone market, where the risk of encountering a device with spyware was previously very high.
