Ukrainian mobile operator Kyivstar launches EDGE services

Ukrainian mobile operator Kyivstar has launched Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution (EDGE) services, the company said in a press release Monday.

The services have been launched in Kiev, Lviv, Dnipropetrovsk, Odessa, Kharkiv, Donetsk, Simferopol, Yalta, Feodosiya and Sevastopol, Kyivstar said.

The data transmission speed of Kyivstar’s EDGE services currently totals up to 240 kilobits per second, the company said.

Kyivstar, or Kievstar, was set up in 1994 and it launched its GSM standard network in December 1997.

Norwegian telecommunications company Telenor holds 56.51% in Kyivstar, while Ukraine’s company Storm, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Russian financial industrial conglomerate Alfa Group, holds 43.49%.
