T-Kábel launches IP-phone service

Hungarian cable operator T-Kábel has launched its first phone service in Szeged with huge interest from customers. In recent weeks, the service was also launched to almost 100,000 households in Békéscsaba, Makó, Hódmezovásárhely, Békés, Gyula, Esztergom and Dunakeszi. The operator plans to offer triple play – that is cable TV, Internet and phone, in four more Hungarian towns by the end of this year and is seeking to increase the number of potential clients by several tens of thousands of people. The cable subsidiary of Magyar Telekom expects to gain 10-30 percent of wireline telephone subscribers in these towns in the long run. However, a T-Kábel spokesperson admitted that the future is difficult to predict, as counter-actions of local service providers are likely to come soon and other competitors may appear on the market as well.
